Frequently Asked Therapy Questions

Insurance, Cancellations, Fees, Scheduling, Etc.

  • How do I know if therapy is right for me?

In all honesty, therapy is for everyone who really wants to get out of the uncomfortably comfortable.

Finding out what approaches and/or therapists we work best with will take trial and error and honesty. There are a thousand reasons for seeking therapy, but its really most effective when you’re committed and ready to work on things. It can help with long-standing issues, or addressing immediate and unexpected stressors.

It is okay not to know where to start or what to do (I’m really good at talking and asking questions, ha). Start with the first step-engagement and willingness to try.

  • Are you LGBTQIA+ and kink-affirming?

    Yes, nothing less.

We are LGBTQIA+ allies and we will stand alongside conversations of sex/kink exploration.

  • Can you tell others what I say in a session?

    Nah. Nope. Noooo.

Legally, therapists have a obligation to protect confidentiality. Therapists are not allowed to share personal information with other parties unless prior disclosed consent, from you, is provided to do so, even if you’re a minor.

The only exceptions to confidentiality are when you threaten harm to yourself or another person, if you intend to harm yourself or another person, or if there is suspected child, dependent, or elder abuse.

There are legal confidentiality extensions, if court ordered, but in those circumstances, therapists strive to advocate for clients to retain confidentiality, assert privilege, and limit records.

  • What is therapy like?

“life’s what you make it…” Miss Montana

Therapy should feel like non-judgmental support.

It can look different for everyone depending on the type of therapy needed (couples, family, individual, etc.), the approach, the therapist, clients’ participation and willingness, and engagement.

We strive for a genuine, supportive partnership where we engage in open, honest conversations with empathetic listening. We value the way we show up for our clients and provide real, actionable feedback. Ultimately, we thrive to provide a non-judgmental space to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

  • What issues or challenges do you specialize in?

We are specialized in anxiety and ADHD, but also work with individuals experiencing life-transitions, motivation limitations, depression, PTSD, and other everyday life stressors.

  • What types of therapy do you offer?

We offer both in person and telehealth therapy sessions for individuals and for couples/families. Utilizing blends of: CBT, ACT, DBT, SFT, Strength Based Approaches, Motivational Interviewing, and others.

  • How does billing work?

We will file the claim with your insurance company. Clients are responsible for providing up to date insurance information and payment information. We process claims and payments as soon as they are available. You are also able to request monthly or weekly invoices

  • What should I bring or prepare for a therapy session?

    Bring yourself.

You can bring a journal, but if you think that is too therapyish then don’t. Sometimes we will have homework and journals are helpful to assist with remembering what you wanted to talk about in session.

  • How do I log into the video appointment?

Please check your email for the link to the video. Emails are sent 24 hours in advance. If you did not receive an email, please contact your therapist for a link. When your therapist logs into the appointment you will automatically be logged in. Let the therapizing begin!

  • What ages do you work with?

We currently work with ages 13+.

  • How do I schedule a session?

“Call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me.” -Kim Possible

    (please don’t call me)

You can fill out the request form here or email us. Our therapists will respond to inquiries and calls within 24 hours. After your first intake appointment, your therapist will discuss further scheduling options (and probably share their phone number).

  • Can I attend sessions with my loved ones?

Parents of minors are allowed to attend sessions as deemed appropriate by the therapist. Minors over the age of 12 are able to see therapists without consent of a parent in the state of Illinois.

If you prefer family or joint sessions, we can explore options.

  • What are your fees for therapy sessions?

Initial consultations are $200 dollars and following sessions are $175.

  • How long is a session?

Our sessions will start on the hour and go for 53 minutes.

  • Can I schedule a consultation call?

Right now, we prefer to meet via initial session. We believe it is hard to see if the therapeutic relationship can be a fit via a 15 minute consult call.

  • How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?

We won’t know until we try. Therapists are not a one fits all situation. Let’s meet and we can see if we are a match.

  • Cancellations, Rescheduling, Late policy?

    Life happens, we get it.

Cancellations, or no-show, an appointments under 24 hours incurs a $175 late fee.

Please note we are not able to provide services to clients who are not in Illinois at the time of appointment. If you are out of state and attend a session, the session will be cancelled and the $175 fee will be assessed. Also for your safety and ethical reasons we are not allowed to engage in tele-health sessions while you are driving. Please pull over to engage in session. If you are driving during a tele-health session, the session will be cancelled and the fee will be assessed

15 minutes+ late to an appointment, subjects the appointment to an automatic cancellation and incurs the $175 late fee.

To avoid late fees please reach out to your therapist for alternate scheduling options/rescheduling.

  • Can I call you to ask more questions?

    EMAIL us please.

We’re probably in session, hiding from our phones, playing with the dramatic frenchie, or playing Fortnite.

  • Do you work with people who feel “different” or out of place?

    YES PLEASE!

You’ve found the right place! You’re exactly where you need to be. At The Black Sheep Sanctuary we celebrate feeling different. Conforming is weird.

  • What types of insurance do you accept?

Insurance is so confusing, and most of the time I think it is stupid complicated.

We are in network with most major insurance carriers. To be certain on benefits, in network availability, and coverage please call member services, on the back of your card, and clarify coverage. Member services will better be able to answer questions about your current deductible, co-pay or co-insurance information, what amount is covered, etc.

We accept United Health Care & UMR, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO & Community Health, and Cigna health insurance plans. We also offer self-pay options and good faith estimates. Further rates and service information can be found under the services tab.
